Kundli matching consultations: is matching necessary?
Last updated
Kundli matching is a family choice, not a requirement. If you do match, the 36-guna score is only the starting point: a good astrologer reads both whole charts, checks the exceptions and leaves the decision to you.
Is kundli matching necessary for marriage?
No law requires it, and many happy marriages, arranged and love marriages alike, never had one. Whether it is necessary is a question of your family’s beliefs, not of astrology itself. In many Hindu families, though, matching is part of how two families get to know each other and reassure themselves, and a careful matching session can genuinely help a couple talk about temperament, expectations and timing.
The useful question is therefore not “must we match?” but “if we match, how do we make sure it helps rather than harms?” The answer is to treat it as a consultation with an astrologer who looks at both whole charts, rather than as a pass-or-fail score.
What the guna score measures
North Indian matching usually uses Ashtakoota (“eight factors”) milan. It compares the two Moon signs and birth nakshatras across eight kootas, worth 36 points (gunas) in total:
| Koota | Points | Traditionally looks at |
|---|---|---|
| Varna | 1 | Temperament and outlook |
| Vashya | 2 | Mutual attraction and influence |
| Tara | 3 | Birth-star compatibility, wellbeing |
| Yoni | 4 | Physical and intimate compatibility |
| Graha Maitri | 5 | Friendship between the Moon-sign lords |
| Gana | 6 | Nature: deva, manushya or rakshasa |
| Bhakoot | 7 | Moon-sign relationship; family and finances |
| Nadi | 8 | Constitution; traditionally linked with health and children |
A total of 18 or more is conventionally treated as acceptable. South Indian families often use the porutham system instead, which checks around ten factors as agreeable or not rather than adding points. Both systems rely only on the Moon’s position, which is why they are a starting point rather than a verdict.
If you would like to see your score before meeting an astrologer, our sister site horoscopes.today (run by the same company as Astro Meet) calculates gun milan from both birth details.
What a good astrologer looks at beyond the score
- The whole of both charts, especially the ascendant, the seventh house of partnership and its lord, Venus, and for many astrologers the navamsa (D9) chart.
- Mangal (Kuja) dosha in both charts, and the many traditional conditions under which it is considered cancelled or balanced. A dosha in one chart is often matched by a similar one in the other.
- Exceptions within the kootas. Classical rules cancel some apparent problems, such as a low Bhakoot or a Nadi dosha, when other conditions are met. A raw score can hide these.
- Timing. The dasha periods each person is entering, and a suitable muhurta for the wedding.
- The couple themselves. Shared values, health, families and how they handle conflict, which no chart replaces.
Preparing for a matching session
- Collect both people’s birth date, time and place, and note how reliable each time is.
- Agree in advance who will attend: the couple, parents, or both.
- Decide what you want to learn: compatibility, timing of the wedding, or both.
- For a love marriage, say so: the session can then focus on strengthening the relationship rather than on approval.
- Ask for the reasoning behind any concern, not only the conclusion.
Exact times matter here too: a Moon close to the end of a sign or nakshatra can change the score. See birth details an astrologer needs. For good marriage questions to bring, see questions to ask an astrologer.
When the couple has already decided
For couples who have chosen each other, matching works best as a constructive conversation: understanding each other’s temperament, anticipating pressures in particular periods, and choosing a good wedding date. Many astrologers are comfortable working this way; it is worth asking for it explicitly when you book.
Frequently asked questions
Is kundli matching necessary for marriage?
It is not legally required and many happy marriages never had one. It is a matter of family belief. If your family values it, a full consultation that reads both charts is far more useful than relying on the guna score alone.
How many gunas should match for marriage?
In Ashtakoota milan the maximum is 36 points, and 18 or more is conventionally treated as acceptable. Astrologers also check Mangal dosha, cancellations of individual koota problems and the whole of both charts, so the score alone should not decide anything.
Is kundli matching necessary for a love marriage?
No. For a couple who have already chosen each other, matching can still be useful as a conversation about temperament and timing, including choosing a wedding date, but it is not a test the relationship has to pass.
What if our kundlis do not match?
Ask the astrologer to explain exactly which factor is weak, whether classical cancellations apply, and what it practically refers to. Get a second opinion before acting on a low score, and be wary of anyone who uses it to sell an expensive remedy.
