Find your Vedic rising sign (lagna)
Last updated
Enter your date, time and place of birth to find the sidereal sign rising in the east when you were born: your lagna, with its degree, lord and the window of clock time it covers. Below: how it is calculated, why every house reading depends on it, and what to ask when it sits close to a sign edge.
How the lagna is calculated
Your lagna is whichever degree of the ecliptic was coming up over the eastern skyline when you were born. Finding it takes three inputs: the date and clock time, the UTC offset in force, and the place, either chosen from the list of cities or entered as latitude and longitude. Picking a city fills in its usual offset; change it if summer time applied or if the birth fell in a period when India kept a different clock, such as the war-time offset of the 1940s.
From the time and the longitude, the tool works out local sidereal time, which says which part of the sky is crossing the meridian. Combining that with the latitude and the tilt of the Earth’s axis gives the ecliptic degree that is rising. Subtracting the Lahiri ayanamsa converts it to the sidereal zodiac. The result gives the sign and degree, the nakshatra and pada of that degree, the lord of the sign and its element, and the clock times between which the same sign was rising at that place.
Why every house reading hangs on the lagna
In a Vedic chart the lagna sign becomes the first house and the other eleven signs follow in order. So the lagna decides which house every planet falls in, which planet rules each house, and which planets are functional benefics or malefics for you. Change the lagna by one sign and every one of those judgements moves with it: the planet that rules your career house is different, the house Saturn transits next year is different, even the reading of a yoga can change.
That is why an experienced astrologer will usually settle the lagna before saying anything specific. The lagna lord gets particular attention: its sign, house, strength and the planets that aspect it say a great deal about how the chart as a whole works. Planets sitting in the first house, or aspecting it, colour the reading too. A lagna on its own, though, is a frame rather than a reading; the description of “a Simha lagna person” you find in books is a starting sketch that the rest of the chart quickly modifies.
How sensitive the lagna is to the birth time
Over twenty-four hours all twelve signs take a turn on the horizon, which works out at about a degree for every four minutes of clock time and an average of two hours per sign. But signs do not rise at an even pace. Some take well under two hours and others well over, and the difference grows the further you are from the equator, as the table below shows. A birth during a fast-rising sign leaves less room for error.
The calculator shows the rising window for your birth and warns you when the next or previous sign is within fifteen minutes of the time you entered. It also reminds you about old local times and war time where they could apply. The degree, and the nakshatra pada of the degree, change much faster than the sign: a pada passes in around a quarter of an hour.
If your lagna is close to a sign edge
A lagna in the first or last degree of a sign is the case where a consultation can go wrong without anyone noticing. Before relying on the reading, find out which sign the astrologer is using and why. Good practitioners check a doubtful lagna against your life: the timing of major events against the dashas, physical build and temperament, and charts that change faster than the lagna, such as the navamsa. This is birth-time rectification, and it is a fair thing to ask for, or to ask about, before paying for detailed predictions.
Questions to ask your astrologer about your lagna
- Which lagna are you using for me, and how sure are you of it given my recorded birth time?
- My lagna is near the edge of a sign: have you rectified the time, and which events did you test it against?
- Do you use whole-sign houses or a bhava chart, and does any planet change house between the two?
- Where is my lagna lord, and how strong is it?
- Which planets are functional benefics and malefics for my lagna, and how does that affect my current dasha?

How long each lagna lasts at three latitudes
The time each sidereal sign spends on the eastern horizon over one day, computed with the same method as the calculator and rounded to the minute, for Chennai (13.08° N), Delhi (28.61° N), London (51.51° N). Each sign rises once a day, so each column adds up to a full sidereal day (about 23 h 56 min).

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between lagna, ascendant and rising sign?
In everyday use they name the same thing: the sign coming up over the eastern horizon at the moment and place of birth. Lagna is the Sanskrit word. A Vedic chart measures it in the sidereal zodiac, so it is often one sign earlier than a Western rising sign for the same birth.
Why does the lagna need my place of birth when the Moon sign does not?
The Moon's position is nearly the same for everyone on Earth at a given instant, but the sign on the eastern horizon depends on where you stand. Moving east or west changes local sidereal time, and moving north or south changes how quickly each sign rises. That is why the calculator asks for a city or for latitude and longitude.
My recorded time is rounded to the nearest half hour. Can I trust the result?
Look at the rising window in the result. If your whole uncertainty fits inside it, the sign is safe even if the degree is not. If the window ends within your margin of error, the lagna is genuinely uncertain and an astrologer may want to rectify the time before reading houses.
Which house system does the lagna set up?
Most Vedic astrologers use whole signs: the lagna sign is the first house, the next sign the second, and so on. Some also draw a bhava chart in which the lagna degree marks the middle of the first house, which can move a planet near a sign edge into a neighbouring house. Ask which your astrologer uses.
Is the lagna more important than the Moon sign?
They do different jobs. The lagna fixes the houses and is read for the body and the overall direction of life; the Moon sign is read for the mind and is the usual base for transits. Many astrologers read the chart from both and give extra weight to whichever is stronger.
Is my time and place of birth stored anywhere?
No. The ascendant is computed by script inside this browser tab. Astro Meet never receives the date, time or coordinates you enter, the page keeps no copy on your device, and the details are not added to the web address.
